PLEASE FOLLOW THESE BASIC INSTRUCTIONS WHEN ADDING YOUR NEW FISH TO THE POND
1. CHECK YOUR WATER TEMPERATURE (JUST ASK TO FIND OUT THE TEMPERATURE OF OUR WATER). KOI ARE FAIRLY RESILIENT TO CHANGE OF TEMPERATURE IF ACCLIMATISED FOR LONG ENOUGH BUT IF THERE IS A GREAT DIFFERENCE (MORE THAN 10 DEGREE F / 5 DEGREE C) YOU NEED TO ASK ADVISE TO SEE IF IT IS SAFE TO MOVE THEM.
2. WE ASSUME THAT YOU HAVE ALREADY TESTED AMMONIA, NITRITE AND PH. AMMONIA AND NITRITE SHOULD BE 0 OR AT LEAST VERY LOW. OUR PH IS KEPT AT AROUND 7-7.5 AND AGAIN KOI WILL TOLERATE A MODERATE CHANGE OF PH BUT IF YOUR PH IS UNDER 6 OR OVER 8 YOU NEED TO MAKE SOME ADJUSTMENTS BEFORE RELEASING YOUR NEW KOI.
3. WE PACK ALL OUR FISH IN PLASTIC BAGS FILLED WITH OXYGEN SO PROVIDING YOU KEEP THEM AT A REASONABLE TEMPERATURE THEY WILL SURVIVE HAPPILY FOR 12-24 HOURS. THERE IS NO RUSH TO OPEN THE BAGS.
4. FLOAT THE SEALED BAGS ON THE SURFACE OF THE WATER IDEALLY COVERING THEM WITH SOMETHING TO STOP THEM BEING STARTLED AND TO SHADE THEM FROM THE SUN. IF YOUR TEMPERATURE IS SIMILAR TO OUR OWN THEY ONLY NEED FLOATING FOR 15-20 MINUTES, BUT IF IT IS CONSIDERABLY DIFFERENT IT IS BEST TO FLOAT THEM FOR AT LEAST 1 HOUR.
5. WE KEEP PVD COOKING SALT IN OUR WATER AT THE STRENGTH OF 0.3% OR 1.4 KG PER 450 LITRE (100 GALLON) OF WATER. THIS ACTS AS A MILD ANTISEPTIC AND IS HELPFUL TO ALLEVIATE STRESS AFTER THE FISH HAS TRAVELLED. THIS AND OR A MILD BACTERICIDE SUCH AS MALACHITE GREEN IS RECOMMENDED TO PROTECT THE FISH THAT MAY HAVE LOST A LITTLE SLIME IN TRANSIT. STAY CLEAR OF USING ANY STRONG TREATMENTS SUCH AS FORMALDEHYDE UNTIL THE FISH HAVE SETTLED DOWN AS THEY TEND TO ADD EXTRA STRESS TO THE ALREADY WEAKENED FISH.
6. ALTHOUGH IT IS ALWAYS RECOMMENDED TO QUARANTINE FISH FOR 2-3 WEEKS BEFORE ADDING THEM TO YOUR POND IT IS NOT ALWAYS POSSIBLE AND UNLESS YOU ENSURE THEY HAVE ADEQUATE SPACE AND FILTRATION YOU CAN DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD.
7. WE TRY OUR HARDEST TO ENSURE THAT ALL OUR FISH LEAVE OUR PREMISES 100% HEALTHY. ALL OUR FISH ARE QUARANTINED AND TREATED BEFORE THEY REACH OUR SALES AREA AND SHOULD BE IN GOOD HEALTH. WE WILL NOT KNOWINGLY SELL AN UNHEALTHY FISH, BUT JUST A CHANGE OF WATER CAN SOMETIMES BE ENOUGH TO UPSET A FISH OR BE THE CATALYST TO CAUSE HEALTH PROBLEMS. IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS ASK OUR ADVICE IMMEDIATELY.
